Sandray, the Flat Viper

Sandray is a reclusive, ground-dwelling creature that has adapted exceptionally well to the harsh conditions of desert environments. Its most distinctive feature is its broad, flattened body, formed by a set of extended neck flaps that spread outward like a disc. At first glance, this unusual shape gives the impression of a gliding or ray-like animal, but beneath this form lies a long, serpentine frame. Sandray is, in essence, a snake-like creature—its true body is elongated and flexible, built for coiling, striking, and shifting beneath the sand. The wide flaps serve both as camouflage and a means of movement, allowing it to skim across dunes with minimal disturbance.

This combination of body types gives Sandray an alien, hard-to-read silhouette that blends seamlessly with its surroundings. Its coloration mirrors the desert itself, with muted tones of tan, ochre, and pale brown that shift slightly depending on the region. The surface of its skin carries a fine texture that resembles sand-blasted stone, further blurring the line between creature and landscape. The head is subtly integrated into its shape, with eyes set low and forward, suited for detecting movement at ground level.

Sandray moves with a fluid, deliberate grace that borders on the surreal. Its wide body remains low and level as it travels, rippling in subtle waves that disturb only the uppermost layer of sand. It leaves no clear tracks and produces no sound as it moves, making it nearly impossible to detect until it is already in striking range. Even when spotted, its motion is difficult to follow; the way it shifts through the terrain makes it seem as though its body dissolves into the sand and reappears elsewhere. Light and shadow slide across its form in a way that obscures its outline, giving it a ghost-like presence among the dunes.

When hunting, Sandray remains motionless for extended periods, buried just beneath the surface with only a faint impression marking its presence. It waits patiently, sometimes for hours, until prey ventures close. At the critical moment, it explodes into action with startling speed, flinging sand outward as it strikes with long, retractable fangs. Its venom acts quickly, neutralizing smaller creatures almost immediately and weakening larger ones before they can escape. The initial burst of movement is often accompanied by a flurry of sand, masking the strike and disorienting the target.

In danger, Sandray relies on misdirection rather than aggression. It will abruptly stir its flaps to raise a controlled veil of sand around itself, obscuring vision for just a few seconds—enough time to vanish beneath the surface or reposition. The transition from visible to hidden is so swift and complete that many who witness it are left unsure if they truly saw a creature at all. Some describe it as if the ground itself had come to life and then returned to stillness in an instant.

While not commonly seen and rarely aggressive without cause, Sandray commands a quiet respect from those who share its environment. Its presence is rarely obvious, but always close. Travelers are often warned to tread carefully in regions of still, undisturbed sand—because Sandray may be waiting, perfectly still, watching from just beneath the surface.
