Velgrys, the Marble Gryphon

Velgrys are rare, reclusive creatures found nesting along the upper ridges of marble-rich mountain ranges. Their bodies are composed entirely of rose-tinted marble, appearing as if sculpted by master artisans rather than born of nature. Despite their stone makeup, Velgrys are capable of sustained flight, aided by a unique biological ability to shift their mass at will. This allows them to soar silently with the lightness of feathers and then become crushingly heavy in an instant, a trait they use to devastating effect during aerial dives and territorial defense.

Highly territorial, Velgrys establish solitary nests or form long-term breeding pairs that occupy sheer cliffside ledges, often inaccessible to other creatures. Their nesting behavior is meticulous; they line their nests with mineral dust and small stones, maintaining cleanliness and structure through regular care. Hatchlings are raised with intense protection, and both parents are known to remain nearby throughout development, often patrolling the surrounding skies in wide arcs.

Velgrys are apex predators within their territory, preferring to ambush from above. They remain motionless for long periods, blending seamlessly into their rocky surroundings, only revealing their presence when they strike. Their eyesight is acute, capable of tracking movement over great distances. Observations suggest a high degree of intelligence, with reported cases of tool-like use of stones to dislodge threats or manipulate their nesting area.

While encounters with Velgrys are uncommon due to their remote habitats, those who approach their domain uninvited often report sudden, bone-rattling gusts followed by near-silent swoops. Survivors describe the moment of attack as being struck by living stone with surgical precision. Despite their fearsome defense of territory, Velgrys do not seek conflict and rarely pursue beyond their established bounds unless provoked.

Ancient records from mountain communities sometimes depict marble-winged beasts perched atop temples or carved into cliff walls, suggesting that Velgrys may have been known and revered long before formal study began.
