“It is not in the zone. It is the zone.”
Litheon, Living Statue
Litheon, is a rarely encountered organism inhabiting isolated white stone quarries where sharp marble cliffs rise under a pale sky and the ground is coated in fine, powder-like dust. Its body is composed of the same smooth, white mineral as its environment, featuring seamless plating, subtle fracturing, and symmetrical features that cause it to be mistaken for a man-made statue. When motionless, which is its default state, there are no signs of respiration or biological activity. It simply sits or stands, unmoving, sometimes for days, weeks, or longer.
Litheon displays no foraging behavior, no signs of feeding or hydration, and does not interact with other creatures in its vicinity unless directly approached or provoked. It does not establish territory or show signs of social hierarchy or reproduction. It is unknown whether it ages, heals, or dies by conventional means. Its presence in the quarry feels more like a fixed environmental feature than an animal inhabiting it.
When disturbed, Litheon's response varies. It may remain inert, allow passive contact, or react with immediate, precise motion to neutralize perceived threats. Its movement is sudden but deliberate, as if guided by an internal mechanism rather than muscle or instinct. It has been known to interfere with heavy excavation activity, particularly machinery or loud, destructive operations, often dismantling equipment or forcing abandonment of work zones. However, it does not pursue or stalk intruders beyond the immediate area of disturbance, and there are documented cases of it tolerating human passage without reaction.
Attempts to remove or study Litheon under controlled conditions have proven unsuccessful. Specimens subjected to containment either disintegrate into white particulate dust or vanish entirely without trace. No viable method has been found to induce behavior outside of its habitat, and no measurable biological samples have been retained. Its origin remains unknown—whether it is born, shaped by its environment, or an expression of the landscape itself.
Observers describe Litheon as possessing an unmoving, golden gaze that remains fixed regardless of light, movement, or temperature. It appears to watch without blinking or reacting. It is unclear whether it perceives its surroundings in any conventional sense. In every way, Litheon resembles a sentient geological structure—silent, inert, and dangerous only when pressed to action. Theories about its nature range from mineral-based lifeform to an autonomous geological anomaly. What it waits for, if it waits for anything at all, remains a mystery.
