“It didn’t see me, not really. It just... knew I was there. And then a moment later, I couldn’t remember why I came into the room.”
—Excerpt from Field Log
Virdraith, the Scythe Beak
Virdraith, commonly referred to as the Scythe Beak, is an entity observed in regions where the natural order has subtly but undeniably shifted. These locations—overgrown forest clearings, forgotten burial sites, or long-abandoned ruins—share a common trait: an atmosphere that feels weighed down by more than age. It is within these quietly disturbed places that Virdraith is known to appear, not as an intruder, but as part of the environment itself, as if drawn in through unseen fractures between layers of reality.
Its form is consistent across reports. The head resembles an ornate scythe blade, curved and elongated, often etched with faint markings that seem to change with proximity. Where a creature’s face might be, there is glowing eyew embedded into the metal—fixed points of focus that observers report as being “aware but uninterested.” The rest of the body lacks cohesion. Rather than flesh or bone, it trails in plumes of dark, semi-transparent matter, like loose feathers or smoke moving in slow current. No limbs have been identified. Its movement is smooth and frictionless, often described as drifting or sliding without sound or resistance.
Despite its unsettling appearance, Virdraith is not openly aggressive. It does not pursue or attack without clear stimulus, and in some cases, individuals have remained within its range for extended periods without incident. However, when it does engage, its method is not physical. Witnesses describe a sudden sensation of stillness followed by mental interruption—memories go missing, senses dull, and in rare cases, individuals lose the ability to orient themselves in time. These effects vary, but they are consistent enough to suggest that Virdraith feeds not on physical energy, but something closer to identity or presence.
It is unclear whether Virdraith is a solitary species or one of many similar entities. Its behavior suggests territorial awareness, but not dominance. It does not mark or manipulate the space it occupies, nor does it seem to respond to territorial intrusion with territorial aggression unless provoked. Reports indicate that its presence becomes more active when the ambient conditions in the area become more heavily saturated—when the space feels thicker, quieter, and more isolating. In these conditions, Virdraith is known to move with intent, often slowly circling paths or appearing directly in the wake of living movement.
Attempts to repel or disrupt it have produced inconsistent results. High-frequency sound, rapid motion, and strong artificial light occasionally deter it briefly, but do not cause it to flee. It does not appear to fear fire, water, or traditional repellents. Some field researchers have noted that remaining still and minimizing thought activity—what they refer to as “mental quiet”—can reduce the likelihood of engagement.
Virdraith is not considered to be a primary threat, but rather a signal that the space it inhabits has undergone a change not yet fully understood. It exists because the environment allows it to, and while it may be a threat to the unaware, it is not malicious. Studying it may lead to greater insight into the nature of the spaces it inhabits, and what greater forces—if any—are responsible for their emergence.
