Malavere, the Dark Jester
Malavere, the dark jester, is a creature woven from illusion, shadow, and forgotten laughter. It is said to appear only under rare celestial alignments, often during a strange, silent dusk when even birds refuse to sing. Those who have encountered it describe the arrival as a shifting of atmosphere—warmth drains from the air, colors dull, and the world feels suddenly staged, as if caught in the lull between acts of a play.
This being constructs vivid, elaborate illusions, most often in the form of grand carnivals filled with light, music, and joy. These illusions are not simple tricks of the eye but full sensory fabrications that can last hours or even days. To the unaware, it becomes a place of wonder. But for those who begin to question what they see, small discrepancies begin to appear: a man with mismatched shoes, a child whose shadow stretches in the wrong direction, laughter that echoes without a source. The carnival is not a trap in the traditional sense—it is an invitation to relax, to lower one's guard, and to surrender something essential.
Malavere sustains itself by harvesting shadows. To lose one’s shadow to this creature is not merely symbolic; it results in a profound psychological change. Victims find themselves unable to bear the brightness of day. They linger in darkened places, emotionally dulled, their focus broken, their spirits weighed by a persistent lethargy that defies explanation. Light irritates them, not physically, but as if it carries a weight they can no longer bear. This affliction does not fade with time.
Beyond its illusions, Malavere is known to manipulate shadows directly, shaping them into tangible forms. These manifestations can grasp, bind, and even mimic life. In more malicious instances, it attaches shadows to other beings, using them as marionettes in its performances. While not omnipotent, its abilities are refined, the result of centuries—perhaps longer—of honing its craft.
It moves with deliberate exaggeration, each gesture echoing the performance halls of some long-lost theater. It speaks, when it chooses to, in rehearsed tones—never raising its voice, yet always commanding attention. There is no record of it ever displaying rage or panic. Only performance. Every act it commits seems part of a larger script only it understands.
The origin of Malavere is unknown. Some stories claim it was born from the final laughter of a dying king; others say it is the embodiment of every forgotten jester, every performer who died unheard.
Malavere does not destroy cities or wage wars. It needs no spectacle beyond its own. What it seeks, and why, remains uncertain. But when laughter rings out in the dark without a source, and shadows begin to move against the light, some believe the curtain is rising again.
