Ignewt, the Lava Lizard

Ignewt is a small but resilient creature that thrives in the heart of volcanic regions, where rivers of molten rock carve through the land. Its body is naturally adapted to withstand extreme temperatures, covered in a thick, heat-resistant skin that insulates it from the surrounding magma. This adaptation, inherited from its draconic lineage, allows it to remain submerged in molten rock for extended periods without harm. The creature moves effortlessly through lava flows, using its strong limbs and flexible tail to propel itself through the molten currents like a being born of fire itself. It is rarely seen by those unfamiliar with the burning landscapes it inhabits, as it prefers to remain near the safety of lava pools, submerging itself at the first sign of disturbance.

Despite its harsh environment, Ignewt is a highly curious creature. It often lingers near the edges of cooled rock formations, cautiously observing anything unusual in its surroundings. It has been known to investigate moving objects, glowing minerals, or even creatures that stray too close to its domain, though it quickly retreats if startled. Its movements are swift and fluid, capable of darting across unstable terrain without sinking and slipping into lava before a threat can react.

Ignewt feeds on the scarce but resilient flora and fauna that manage to survive in the burning terrain. It consumes hardy, ash-coated vegetation and burrowing creatures that emerge from cracks in the rock. With limited food sources, it is an opportunistic feeder, capable of surviving long periods without sustenance by slowing its activity during periods of scarcity. Its sharp, curved claws allow it to scrape minerals and hardened deposits from cooled lava, supplementing its diet with nutrient-rich sediments.

Its nesting habits are a rare sight, as it constructs its burrows from lava that is in the process of cooling. Using its body and tail, it shapes and reinforces the rock, creating a hardened den where it lays clusters of eggs. Hatchlings emerge fully formed but significantly smaller, instinctively drawn to the heat of magma as their first refuge. Parental care is minimal, as the young are left to fend for themselves shortly after hatching. Only a fraction of them survive to adulthood, as the treacherous landscape and scarce resources claim many before they can fully adapt to their environment.

Though not aggressive, Ignewt is elusive and cautious. If cornered, it releases a sudden burst of intense heat from its body, creating a temporary wave of scorching air to deter attackers. It is rarely seen by those unfamiliar with volcanic regions, as it remains deep within the molten rivers and caves that it calls home, emerging only when the land briefly cools before erupting once more.
