Ferrox, the Magnet Horn
Ferrox are compact, creatures known for their unusual skeletal structure composed of dense, iron-rich material. Though small in size—barely larger than a wild goat—they are remarkably heavy and solid, capable of withstanding powerful physical impacts without flinching. This dense internal structure is not metallic armor but an evolved skeleton that naturally attracts and channels electromagnetic energy.
They inhabit deep mountain valleys and narrow crag-strewn passes where iron and steel ore is close to the surface. These creatures rely on their environment to maintain their bodies, frequently scraping their horns against mineral-rich rocks and consuming trace amounts of ore. The iron intake is essential, allowing them to gradually reinforce their bones and keep their internal magnetism stable. Regions with higher magnetic activity tend to support stronger or more aggressive individuals, as their bodies become more attuned to electromagnetic fields over time.
Ferrox possess a pair of thick, curved horns—one charged positively, the other negatively—creating a constant magnetic field between them. Lightning-like arcs often flicker between the tips when they are agitated or preparing to charge. Despite their wild, aggressive nature, Ferrox are calculated in their behavior. They are aware of their size and welcome the assumption that they are less of a threat. When provoked, they deliver sudden, high-speed charges powered by their magnetic core, capable of driving their horned heads through boulders or heavy prey.
Highly territorial, they compete for mineral-rich zones and will drive off intruders with brute force. Encounters between individuals often involve violent head clashes, used both as displays of strength and to recalibrate their magnetic orientation. Though not inherently social, some younger individuals have been observed shadowing older ones, likely as a form of unspoken learning behavior.
Ferrox are rarely seen near human settlements due to their aversion to artificial metal and urban electromagnetic noise. However, miners and climbers occasionally report strange compass disruptions or storm-like phenomena in areas where Ferrox are known to live. These creatures are viewed with a mixture of caution and respect by those familiar with the highland terrain, often referred to in local stories simply as "the magnet horn."
