Chochomp, the Snapping Book Pokémon
Chochomp is a restless, chaotic entity that has fused with an ancient book, though any knowledge it once contained has been permanently lost. The pages, now hardened and fused together, can no longer be opened, bound shut by the metal clamps that have become a part of its very body. Whatever purpose the book may have served—whether it held forgotten wisdom, simple stories, or even something mundane—no longer matters. Chochomp itself is entirely indifferent to its past, driven only by its primal instincts to chase, snap, and menace anything in its path.
Despite its eerie appearance, Chochomp does not linger ominously or exude an air of wisdom like some other ghost Pokémons. Instead, it is a jittery, hyperactive presence, always twitching with impatience when it has nothing to bite. It becomes visibly agitated when idle, its metal bindings clicking and its ribbons writhing in frustration, as though the very idea of stillness is unbearable. When it finally locks onto a target, however, its entire demeanor changes—it lunges forward with almost childlike glee, snapping its jagged jaws in an excited, relentless chase. It does not pursue with malice or hunger, nor does it seek to cause harm out of spite. It simply enjoys the act of pursuit, the thrill of snapping its teeth at anything that dares to run.
When there is no one around to chase, Chochomp sulks, often flopping onto the ground like an abandoned book, appearing deceptively calm. Trainers who mistake it for an ordinary object and attempt to pick it up are met with a sudden, vicious snap as it springs to life, latching onto hands, arms, or even clothes with an iron grip. It does not bite to feed, but once it has clamped down, it can be frustratingly difficult to shake off, sometimes stubbornly holding on even after being scolded or attacked. If forcibly removed, it will simply wriggle in place, twitching angrily until it finds something new to chase.
Its ghostly nature allows it to levitate slightly above the ground, though its movement is erratic. It does not float smoothly like other spectral Pokémon; instead, it bounces and jitters, moving in sharp, unpredictable bursts. If particularly frustrated, it will violently shake itself, slamming its covers shut repeatedly as if throwing a tantrum, creating unsettling echoes like distant, rustling whispers. Some claim that if you listen closely, these sounds resemble muffled voices, but whether they belong to Chochomp itself or the remnants of whatever once lay within its pages is unknown.
Though it is not particularly strong, Chochomp is persistent. It never chases with true speed, but its sheer refusal to give up makes it an exhausting opponent to deal with. It is a restless, mischievous presence that has long since lost its purpose, now seeking only the momentary joy of snapping at anything foolish enough to cross its path.
